How to Choose the Right Cleanser

by mona on January 10, 2012

A good face cleansing regimen consists of first cleansing and then toning your face. I suggest you use rosewater as your preferred toner. A good cleanser helps to clean the skin of all the stale makeup, excess oils, dirt, that your face accumulates during the day. A daily face cleansing ritual is an extremely important part of one’s facial care regime and in order to do it correctly, you must choose the right facial cleanser.

So let’s take a look at some cleanser types available in the market. A foaming gel cleanser is formulated to work best with individuals who have a combination, oily and acne-prone skin type. Foaming cleansers work by removing the excess dirt and oil from your skin. It does not remove makeup and it has a tendency to dry and strip the skin of its moisture.

Another thing to consider is that most people misinterpret how a facial cleanser is supposed to work. Many people assume that if a cleanser strips away all the oils of your skin and makes you feel squeaky clean, that this is a good thing. They couldn’t be more wrong. A good cleanser is one that removes the EXCESS oils and dirt from your skin. It also leaves behind the good skin oils that are supposed to be left behind to have healthy radiant skin.

So keep in mind, that if after washing your face if your skin feels taut, dry, or squeaky, then you have been far too harsh with your skin. You need to choose a creamier facial cleanser that ultimately makes your skin feel soft, supple, and not taut.

A creamy cleanser will work best on normal and dry skin types and any skin type that feels dry after using a foaming cleanser. These cleansers can remove makeup as they have oils in their them and do a great job of cleansing the skin.

Why No Scrub Cleansers?
Scrubbing your skin is fine on a weekly basis. However your daily skin cleansing products should not contain any sort of beads or scrubbing agent. The skin needs to be exfoliated on a somewhat regular basis, typically once every week. If you were to scrub on a daily basis, your skin will quickly start to show signs of aging and wear and tear. Even during the few times when you do scrub your face, be sure that your technique is gentle and not harsh on the skin.

Two Cleansers? Why?
Your morning cleanser and evening cleanser may have to be different. It really all depends on your skin type. Evening cleansers tend to have more oils and active ingredients in them, to get that excess makeup and oil off of your face. Morning cleansers tend to be a little bit more on the mild side. Another factor to consider is the differences in seasons and weather. Many people prefer to use a creamy cleanser during the winter, since skin is more prone to drying out. A light foaming cleanser in the summer often helps to deal with the excess sweat that the summer months bring to the skin.

Some Warnings
Remember, do not ever wash your face with a cleanser more than twice per day. Over washing the skin is harmful to it. Also remember to always wash with luke warm water and never with hot water. Be sure that whatever products you choose, that they are free of mineral oil, allergens, irritants, sls, sles and toxins. You certainly don’t need any perfumes in your daily cleansers as they are the most likely cause of allergic reactions.

Cool article! I never would have thought scrubbing was so bad for your skin, and I also never would have guessed that using 2 different cleansers can help!

I always used to wash my face until it felt “squeaky clean”. I guess I was wrong to do this! No wonder my skin has been in such poor condition.
